LISTEN TO 1010 WINS

Manville Police responded to a 911 call just before 3 p.m. reporting an assualt outside a home on North 12th Avenue, Davidson said.

The officers were advised by the Somerset County Communications Center while responding to the residence of an unconscious male.

Upon arrival, officers encountered an unresponsive male suffering from a severe head injury and initiated life-saving measures along with emergency medical personnel, the prosecutor said.

The victim, identified as Augustine Garcia, was transported to an area hospital where he was subsequently pronounced deceased.

The man who dialed 911, identified as Samuel C. Coggins, remained at the scene and was allegedly involved in the 50-year-old's assault.

As a result of the preliminary investigation, Coggins was transported to the Manville Police Department.

McDonald said an investigation conducted by the Somerset County Prosecutor's Office Major Crimes Unit and the Crime Scene Investigations Unit revealed that

Coggins was at the residence to assist Garcia and an unnamed resident with moving from the home.

The investigation also revealed that Coggins assaulted Garcia while outside in the driveway of the residence, causing fatal injuries, he added.

Coggins, 30, has been charged with first-degree murder and is being held at Somerset County Jail pending a detention hearing.

The investigation is ongoing and an autopsy will be conducted by the New Jersey Northern Regional Medical Examiner's Office.
