NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — Attorney General Letitia James and a number of elected officials are hosting a Drag Story Hour read-a-thon this Sunday in the West Village.

The event will consist of four reading sessions with family-friendly drag performers from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual & Transgender Community Center.

Alongside James, City Councilmembers Crystal Hudson, Chi Ossé, Erik Bottcher, Tiffany Caban, Shekar Krishnan, Lynn Schulman, Daniel O’Donnell and Deborah Glick all co-sponsored the event. State Assemblymembers Jessica Gonzalez-Rojas and Tony Simone as well as State Senator Brad Hoylman-Sigal are also sponsors.

Drag Story Hour, is a non-profit that organizes storytelling and creative arts programs for children and teens.

The organization has become the target of anti-LGBTQ protests in New York City and across the country.

It’s unclear if protesters will picket Sunday’s event, but the involvement of politicians has already caught the attention of online right-wing provocateurs like Chaya Raichik’s Libs of TikTok account. Raichik is infamous for using misinformation to incite harassment against transgender people and health care providers.

Earlier this month, Tennessee became the first state to ban drag performances. Republicans in at least 16 states have introduced bills that restrict drag performances to varying degrees.

The movement to do away with drag performance has progressed alongside a movement to limit gender affirming care for trans people. These legislative campaigns are set against a backdrop of right-wing media figures and politicians increasingly pushing a false narrative that gay and trans people are pedophiles conspiring to corrupt children.
