Geraldo Balbuena, 68, was charged in New York State Supreme Court with second-degree murder, a class A felony.
According to court documents and statements, on June 10, around 10 p.m., Balbuena called his niece and said he had done "something bad" and was going to take his own life.
Officers responded to a 911 call minutes later and arrived at the apartment he shared with his now-deceased wife and found it locked. Police then saw him holding a large wood-handled knife from the fire escape and entered the apartment through an open window.
Once inside, they found Leonilda Nuez Balbuena lying unresponsive on the bedroom floor, according to court documents.
She was rushed to St. Luke's Hospital, where she was pronounced dead due to multiple stab wounds to her chest and abdomen after CPR was attempted to revive her.
"Leonilda Nuez Balbuena's life ended in a shocking and brutal crime," Bragg said in a statement. "No family should ever have to experience the pain caused by this type of tragedy, and we are committed to ensuring accountability."
