NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — Despite the number of murders decreasing from this time last year, major crimes in general are up 38% overall with increases in nearly every category the NYPD tracks.

New York City recorded 26 murders for the year to the date through Jan. 30, which is down from 32 in the same period in 2021, according to the lastest data from the NYPD.
Other crimes faced sharp increases over the past year with grand larceny auto topping the list at a 93% jump.
The number of rapes rose 27% and the amount of robberies increased by 33%.
Other crimes, like burglary and felony assault, went up by smaller rates, 6% and 12%, respectively.
The department also noted that shootings went up 32% while hate crimes rose by 79%.
In the city's transit system, crimes rose by 70%. The figure was revealed just a week after the NYPD's new transit chief to announce the immediate deployment of more officers throughout the subway system.
Mayor Eric Adams, who ran on the promise of keeping New Yorkers safe, now faces the challenge of fulfilling the promise in the shadow of the crime surge, which includes the recent murders of two NYPD officers earlier this month.
Part of the mayor’s response includes a “Blueprint to End Gun Violence”, which has garnered support from the public as well as more than 200 civic and business leaders.
Meanwhile, Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg has faced intense criticism over his decision to not prosecute certain crimes and a reduction in charges for others at a time of rising rates of crime.
