NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — For the first time this year, the NYPD has reported a monthly decrease in crime, with a downturn in major felonies. Hate crimes, however, are a different story.

Overall, the seven major crimes were down 1.2% last month. Transit crimes decreased by roughly 13% compared to last November, as did burglaries, which declined by 6%; grand larceny dropped by 5.5%; and rapes, which are frequently underreported, fell by 14.1%.

On 1010 WINS' Newsline with Brigitte Quinn Monday, NYPD Chief of Crime Control Strategies Michael LiPetri said that with shootings down nearly 33% and murders up 20% compared to last November, the city is on the right track but there's still work to be done.

Referring to shootings, LiPerti said that the city is "now down 250 incidents and almost 285 victims" this year.

Meanwhile, hate crimes have surged by 70% since last November, with antisemitic hate crimes soaring by 125%.

Mayor Eric Adams on Monday defended his decision to attend a mayoral conference on antisemitism in Athens last week, saying there is "an antisemitism problem globally."

Adams said hate crimes are being normalized on social media.

"What social media is doing to socialize hate, to give a platform for hate, to spread hate is just really alarming," he added. "New York City has the largest Jewish population outside of Israel."

The rise in antisemitic hate crimes comes as the NYPD's Hate Crime Task Force is investigating after a Jewish father and his 7-year-old son were shot with a BB gun outside a kosher grocery store on Staten Island on Sunday.
