NEW YORK (1010 WINS/WCBS 880) – An NYPD officer was injured in the Bronx early Thursday when a patrol car swerved to avoid a driver speeding through a red light, police said as the search for the rogue driver continued.
Officers were patrolling in a marked NYPD SUV at East 168th Street and Washington Avenue in Morrisania around 3:20 a.m. when the officer behind the wheel noticed a Range Rover driver running a red light at the intersection.
The officer swerved to avoid being struck and smashed head-on into a light pole.
The officer who was driving declined medical attention at the scene, but his partner suffered a leg injury, possibly a broken leg, according to police.
The partner had to be cut out of the vehicle and transported to NYC Health + Hospitals/Jacobi, where he was recovering Thursday.
The Range Rover driver didn’t remain at the scene and was still at large, police said.
The vehicle is believed to be red with North Carolina plates.
