Police said 19-year-old John Taylor was last seen on Jan. 4, 2000, inside of 70 Broad Street, near Wright Street in the Clifton neighborhood.
Then, on Sept. 1, 2011, Taylor's body was discovered in the same apartment's crawl space.
His death was ruled a homicide by the city's Office of Chief Medical Examiner, who determined he was stabbed in the chest, according to police.
Detectives learned that Taylor never left the building that was then used to house the homeless at the time he vanished, New York Post reports.
His remains were reportedly found after the building's new owner ripped up a carpet after Hurricane Irene flooded the building.
According to the report, he found a trap door leading to the crawl space in the ground with Taylor's bones and a skull hidden inside.
Anyone with information in regard to this incident is asked to call the NYPD's Crime Stoppers Hotline at 1-800-577-TIPS.
