NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- The NYPD is implementing a stricter masking policy now requiring all cops to wear face coverings while on duty regardless of their vaccination status, according to The New York Post.

The order for the new measures for masks was sent out in a department-wide email Sunday night amid a surge in COVID-19 cases in the city.

“All members of the service, regardless of vaccination status, who are able to medically tolerate a face covering, are required to wear a face covering that covers their mouth and nose at all times while they are in a shared indoor workspace, except when eating or drinking,” the email said.

Other mask measures had been previously rolled back and focused on the unvaccinated cops.

According to the email, officers must wear masks at all times when dealing with the public, on public transit, while in schools, and several other locations.

The reinstatement of the mask mandate comes as a result of a surge in COVID-19 cases across the city and due partly due to the Omicron variant.

New York broke its own record for positive COVID-19 cases for the third day in a row on Sunday, with nearly 22,500 cases.

There were 12,404 cases seen in New York City alone.
