NEW YORK (WCBS 880) — Cops are warning drivers for Lyft about a rise in thefts of earnings.

The official Twitter account for the NYPD’s 62nd Precinct Captain Tao Chen sent out a message advising drivers to make sure they don’t allow passengers to handle their phones or any device that is connected to their bank accounts or credit cards.

“There has been an increase in crimes against the operators of LYFT vehicles, especially theft of private funds,” Chen tweeted. “Do not let passengers handle or use any electronic device that is attached to debit cards, bank accounts, or credit cards. Protect your property. Protect your money.”

For-hire drivers have for years been victimized by thieves who commandeer their phones, either through force or through other schemes.

Once the crooks have drivers’ phones, they transfer driver earnings from workers' ride-hailing apps into their own bank accounts.
