The shooting occurred at 9414 Avenue L in Canarsie at 12:52 a.m., when the victim was shot once in the right arm by "an armed individual who fled the scene."

According to authorities, the victim was transported to Brookdale University Hospital Medical Center where he was treated for the gunshot wound and released.

During an "extensive" canvass for witnesses and surveillance camera video, detectives recovered one 9-millimeter shell casing from the scene.

In the course of its investigation, witnesses told detectives they believed the shooter was an off-duty officer.

Investigators identified the officer and obtained his weapons "for comparison with ballistic evidence recovered at the scene," police said.

The investigation was turned over to the NYPD's Internal Affairs Bureau and the Force Investigation Division. Both are working closely with the Brooklyn District Attorney's Office.

Police said the officer has been placed on modified duty pending the outcome of the ongoing investigation.
