NEW YORK (WCBS 880) — Gov. Kathy Hochul on Wednesday announced the grand opening of The Corden, a new $35 million housing development for families in the Bronx.
The new development located in the Longwood section of the borough includes 62 affordable apartments with 37 set aside from homeless families.

“My administration is committed to ending homelessness and creating more affordable housing, and by investing in developments like The Corden in the Bronx, families will have access to a permanent home with the amenities and assistance they need to thrive,” Hochul said of the development.
She added: “These newly built new apartments will allow 62 families to experience the great benefits and stability that comes from having truly good quality homes, allowing them to live safely and securely.”

The housing complex – developed by the non-profit New Destiny Housing – will include on-site services for all families, including financial counseling, professional development, case management, programming for children and other services to promote housing security, Hochul’s office said.
The Corden was originally intended to be named The Bryant but was changed to honor New Destiny Housing's former executive director, Carol Corden, who retired in 2020 after 24 years of helping to create affordable housing for New Yorkers.
Amenities in the building include a multi-purpose program space, library, staff offices for social services, a courtyard and indoor and outdoor children's play areas.
“Bringing more affordable housing to The Bronx is not only important, but will play a crucial role in our borough's recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic,” said Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. “With the completion of The Corden, and the addition of 62 units of affordable housing, including 37 units for recently homeless individuals and families, some of our most vulnerable Bronxites will have a place to call home and access to invaluable services and amenities that will allow them to make a fresh start.”
