NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — A local bird enthusiast rescued a bright pink pigeon from Madison Square Park on Tuesday, according to the Wild Bird Fund.
The Upper West Side non-profit, which rehabilitates wildlife, speculated the bird was dyed for a gender reveal or some other celebration.
“Pigeons come in many different colors, but pink isn't one of them,” wrote the organization on Twitter. “This king pigeon was deliberately dyed and released. As a domestic bird unable to find food in the wild, fly well or escape predators, this poor kid had it bad enough before being dyed.”
WBF said the bird is young — “barely more than a fledgeling” — and showed signs of malnutrition.
“PSA: Please never release a domestic bird to the wild. It will die of starvation or predation,” said the organization. “If you find an all-white pigeon (or any odd color), especially one looking scared and lost, it needs help. Please catch it and contact us or a pigeon rescue org near you.”
