NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — A Queens landlord who failed to install smoke detectors or sprinklers in his rental unit is responsible for the deaths of two sisters who were killed in a fire, according to a lawsuit filed on behalf of the women’s estates.

Noor Naeem, 18, and Amna Syed, 21, died in May 2021 of smoke inhalation in their third-floor apartment, which was owned by landlord Nasreen Akhter.

Fire marshals found the fire was caused by unsafe extension cords, but was made more dangerous by the lack of city-mandated safety equipment in the apartment.

The lawsuit was filed by the Queens Public Administrator’s office on behalf of the victim’s estates because their parents are undocumented immigrants and are unable to sue.

The QPA is seeking unspecified damages for their deaths.
