Shakim Devega, 28, was found unconscious inside the Kingsboro Psychiatric Center on Clarkson Avenue in Prospect Lefferts Gardens at 11:45 p.m.
Devega, a patient at the center, was taken by EMS to NYC Health & Hospitals/Kings County, where he was later pronounced dead.
Police said Devega suffered "trauma to the neck and neck area, which rendered him unconscious" and caused his death.
Devega was sentenced to one year in prison on an attempted robbery conviction in 2015, police told the Daily News. He was released in 2016 but was arrested in 2018 for allegedly sexually abusing a 6-year-old boy.
Court records obtained by the outlet showed he was then convicted of first-degree attempted sexual abuse in 2019.
After serving two years in jail, he was released last year, admitted to the facility and added to the state's sex offenders registry.
It's unclear what motivated Devega's killing at this time or whether his criminal history was a factor, according to the report.
Investigators were reportedly checking surveillance footage inside the facility Friday to try and determine where and when he was attacked.
No arrests have been made.
