NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- Rep. Ritchie Torres on Wednesday said he and other members of Congress would “resume the presidential vote count” after police secured the Capitol, but told 1010 WINS his “heart breaks for my democracy.”

In an interview with 1010 WINS' Larry Mullins, the Bronx congressman said police directed his team to evacuate the Capitol building around 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday as hundreds of President Donald Trump’s supporters breached its doors.

The incident, Torres, said, was “not even a protest. It’s a mob.”

“I’m hopeful that once the situation stabilizes, we’re going to resume the presidential vote count,” he said. “People should understand that never in the history of our country has a sitting president instigated a violent mob to storm into the Capitol for the purpose of derailing a presidential vote count.”

“This is the greatest assault on our democracy in the recent history of the United States,” he added. “My heart breaks for my democracy, for my country, because the behavior of the mob, and the president of the United States, and the Republican party, has cast a cloud over American democracy in the eyes of the international community, so today’s a sad day.”

“This should be seen as a cautionary tale,” he went on to say. “Our democracy is fragile, and we cannot take for granted the peaceful transfer of power. And all of us have to be vigilant in defending our democracy.”
