NEW YORK (WCBS 880) -- A correction officer working on Rikers Island suffered a big gash to his forehead after being attacked by someone being detained, according to a report.

The 31-year-old officer was working at the Anna M. Kross Center Monday when he was attacked by Marquis Ventura, sources told the New York Daily News in the report.
The officer told the Daily News that Ventura ran up behind him while talking to another inmate, and struck him in the head multiple times, which caused his head to hit the cell door.
“I was instantly leaking blood everywhere all over my face, clothes and equipment,” he said in the report.
Ventura had to be pepper-sprayed to end the attack, while also allegedly included him throwing a chair at another officers.
The officer claimed Ventura had assaulted staff in the past, but never directly had issues with him.
The officer ended up needing 12 stitches during a trip to the hospital, and three other officers suffered undisclosed injuries, the report said.
The Department of Correction told the outlet that Ventura was rearrested. Corrections Officers’ Benevolent Association Benny Boscio took aim at DOC Commissioner Vincent Schiraldi, saying, “Instead of ramping up the hiring of more officers to maintain safety and security, he is too preoccupied with disciplining our officers over frivolous charges.”
The affected officer told the outlet that they had been working consistent double shifts in light of staffing issues, saying how things are going isn't sustainable.
