The off-duty officer's car was sideswiped by a Black Ford SUV as he headed to work around 6:45 a.m at West 155th Street and St. Nicholas Place.
Words were exchanged between the two before someone from the SUV opened fire on the officer's car, police said.
No one was injured during the incident.
The other driver then fled the scene, but police have tracked down the vehicle on Blake Avenue in Brooklyn.
It is not clear if the suspect is in custody at this time.
This is a developing story.
