NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — A Manhattan grand jury indicted a 23-year-old Staten Island man for the attempted rape of a 24-year-old woman on a Lower Manhattan train in November, Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg announced on Thursday.

Chris Tapia allegedly attacked the woman on a 4 train as it approached the Bowling Green station around 11:25 p.m. on Nov. 17.

He stood up in front of her and pulled his pants and underwear down before pushing her down onto the subway car’s seats, according to prosecutors.

The attacker then laid on top of her, groping her as she tried to get up. The victim was able to free herself from underneath the man and flee into the next subway car.

Tapia allegedly fled once the train arrived at the Bowling Green station.

“New Yorkers deserve to ride our subways safely,” said District Attorney Bragg. “This alleged behavior is horrific. We will hold accountable those who commit sexual abuse on our trains or anywhere else.”

Tapia faces charges for attempted rape and sexual abuse.
