NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- A student at a Staten Island elementary school died after collapsing in gym class on Wednesday.

Staff at PS 78 in Stapleton tried to use a defibrillator to revive the student, who anonymous sources told the Staten Island Advance had a pre-existing condition.
Emergency responders rushed the child to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
“It is with great sadness that I inform you that one of our students passed away today. This is a tragedy for the student’s family, our students, and our school community. Our deepest sympathy and condolences go out to the student’s family and our entire school community,” wrote principal Jodi Contento in a letter to students’ families. “Please understand that we are respecting the privacy of the student’s family by not sharing the student’s name.”
Police have not announced the age or name of the child, but a source told the Advance that he was 10 or 11 years old.
