NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- A subway rider was punched and slashed in the face after following a man who stole his cellphone on a Bronx subway train, police said.

The NYPD released a surveillance image Wednesday of the suspect, who is hidden behind sunglasses, a mask and a hood.

The 49-year-old victim was on a southbound 3 train at the Nereid Avenue subway station at White Plains Road in Wakefield around 12:30 p.m. on Sept. 1 when the man came up and snatched his phone from his hand, police said.

The victim followed the suspect and demanded the phone back, but the thief refused and instead punched and slashed him in the face, according to police.

The victim was taken to St. Barnabas Hospital in stable condition.
