NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — A 16-year-old boy was arrested after he tried to bring a loaded gun through security at a Bronx high school Wednesday morning, police said.
According to police, the gun — a loaded black Cobra .380 — was discovered as soon as the student put his backpack through a metal detector at the John F. Kennedy High School Campus on Terrace View Avenue around 9 a.m.
A student who witnessed the incident said the teen was tackled to the ground by school safety agents.
"The security people [were] screaming," she said. "They all huddled together and then I saw the gun and then they started tackling him. He was resisting. He was yelling."
However, the student added that agents were able to successfully restrain him. Police were immediately called to the scene and he was arrested.
The 16-year-old has been charged with criminal possession of a loaded weapon and carrying a weapon on school grounds, police said.
Another student said that she was grateful for the scanners.
"We used to think it was a bad thing because it made us feel like criminals walking into school, but I guess in situations like this it helps," she said. "It makes us feel safer at least."
Police have not released the boy's name due to his age.
"Ensuring that our school buildings are safe day after day is our top priority," said Department of Education spokesperson Jenna Lyle in a statement. "Weapons of any kind have absolutely no place in our school buildings, and NYPD's School Safety Agents safely recovered this item during scanning, ensuring that all students and staff are safe."
