Shannon Campbell was the passenger of a vehicle that broke down early Wednesday within the painted median separating the left and center lanes of the Bruckner Expressway at Barretto Street, police said.

Around 3 a.m., Campbell got out of the disabled car and walked into the right lane where she was hit by a 61-year-old man driving a Toyota Camry, according to cops.

Campbell was thrown into the center lane and other vehicles might have inadvertently hit her in the process. She was found by responding officers unconscious and unresponsive with severe body trauma, officials said.

EMS workers pronounced Campbell dead at the scene. The driver of the Toyota remained at the scene and did not sustain any injuries.

The incident is still under investigation by the NYPD Highway District's Collision Investigation Squad.
