Evelyn Cruz, 48, is charged with second-degree murder and fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon. If convicted, she faces 25 years to life in prison.

According to the charges, Cruz and her neighbor, Jessica Britt, 33, were involved in an argument at their Far Rockaway apartment building shortly after 11:35 p.m. on Jan. 22 that had spilled over from earlier in the day.

During the argument, Cruz allegedly brandished a knife and fatally stabbed the victim once in the chest.

The defendant was arrested shortly after the incident.

"Violence is never the way to resolve a dispute. The defendant is accused of brutally stabbing her neighbor to death." Katz said in a statement.

She continued, "This senseless act has left a family in mourning and the entire community sharing their grief. The defendant is in custody and now faces very serious charges for her alleged actions."

Cruz is scheduled to return to court next Thursday.
