NEW YORK (1010 WINS/WCBS 880) -- A 70-year-old man asked a group to stop smoking pot in a Manhattan apartment building stairwell—and got pepper-sprayed in the face for it.

The victim approached the group shortly before 12:30 p.m. Monday at 419 West 17th St., a high-rise in the Fulton Houses in Chelsea.

He told police the group was smoking weed in the stairwell and that he asked them to leave.

That’s when one of them—a woman believed to be in her teens—sprayed an irritant into his eyes, according to police. The substance is believed to have been pepper spray.

The group then fled the area on foot, police said.

The victim suffered pain and minor injuries to his eyes. He was treated by EMS at the scene.

Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-577-TIPS.
