NEW YORK (1010 WINS/WCBS 880) -- A would-be robber was shot dead by a man he was trying to mug at knifepoint on a Queens street early Wednesday morning, police said.
The deadly confrontation happened on 82nd Avenue, near Queens Boulevard, in Kew Gardens around 2 a.m.
A 65-year-old man was approached by a 32-year-old man, who brandished a sharp object and demanded property from him, police said.
That's when the older man pulled a gun and shot him in the chest. EMS pronounced him dead at the scene.
The 65-year-old was taken into custody for questioning and is reportedly cooperating with police. He had not been charged as of Wednesday.
Police haven't said if he is licensed to carry a firearm.
A gun was recovered at the scene as the investigation continues, police said.
Joe, who works nearby, told 1010 WINS that he believes it's a case of self-defense.
"He's walking along, doing his own thing, minding his own business, and all of a sudden someone comes and attempts to rob him," he said. "He's like surprised and everything like that. He goes to defend his life—you know, at that point you're defending your life."
Mohammad, who also works in the area, agreed. "He messed with the wrong guy, that's what I would say."
