Police Commissioner John Mueller said Yonkers police, assigned to the FBI's Westchester County Safe Streets task force, attempted to arrest three suspects involved in a gun investigation on Elm Street near Linden Street at around 2:10 p.m.

Officers then followed two of the suspects who went into a nearby bodega at 115 Elm Street.

When one suspect then tried to push past a detective, the detective pushed back and the suspect fired once from his pocket, striking the 27-year veteran of the department in the stomach.

An FBI agent who is part of the task force returned fire and fatally shot the suspect.

Mueller said the detective is in critical but stable condition at NYC Health + Hospitals/Jacobi. He is expected to survive. His identity has not been released at this time.

"He lost a tremendous amount of blood, but thankfully, we think he's gonna be okay," he added.

Earlier, the FBI confirmed that members of their "Westchester County Safe Streets task force were involved in a shooting incident in Yonkers, NY."
