Godwin was arrested Monday night after officers responded to a call around 9:30 p.m. about an unconscious man at a home on Monroe Street, near Stewart Avenue, in Garden City.

When officers arrived at the house, they found the man with an apparent laceration to his head. Paramedics pronounced him dead minutes later.

Police said an investigation led detectives to the man's home health aide, Godwin. She was arrested at the scene.

Authorities believe Godwin hit the victim with a wooden object and waited hours to seek medical attention, WCBS-TV reported.

“Gail Godwin did not call for an ambulance, did not get any further medical attention for this man and instead attempted to clean up the blood around the house caused by her assault,” Nassau police Det. Lt. Stephen Fitzpatrick said.

The victim, John Busch, was in a wheelchair, suffered from dementia and required continual care, according to the Daily News.

Godwin, of Bay Shore, was set to be arraigned Wednesday in First District Court in Hempstead.
