HAWTHORNE, N.J. (1010 WINS) -- Police are searching for the driver of a pickup truck that fatally struck an 83-year-old man in a hit-and-run in New Jersey Wednesday night, authorities said.

It happened at about 8:45 p.m. in the vicinity of Wagaraw Road and Passaic Street in Hawthorne, according to Passaic County Prosecutor Camelia M. Valdes.

Joe Bender was struck by a gray 2004 Ford F-150 that fled the scene after the crash, detectives said.

The truck had New Jersey license plate W73-MCN, officials said.

Bender was taken to St. Joseph’s University Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead, Valdes said.

Anyone with information about the crash is asked to call the prosecutor’s office at 877-370-PCPO or the Hawthorne Police Department at 973-427-1800.
