DEAL, N.J. (WCBS 880) -- Officials arrested a 44-year-old man they said yelled obscenities at congregants outside a New Jersey synagogue over the weekend.

At approximately 1 p.m. Saturday, police were called to Ohel Yaacob Congregation at the corner of Ocean and Lawrence avenues in Deal, but the suspect had already fled by the time officers responded to the scene, authorities said.

Police found Nicholas Skirvin a short time later on the 4th Avenue beach in nearby Asbury Park where he was taken into custody.

Skirvin was charged with bias intimidation, terroristic threats and harassment.

An investigation remains ongoing.

“We are appalled that members of the Deal Jewish community were harassed and threatened during Shabbat,” the Anti-Defamation League of New York and New Jersey said in a statement."
