Newark man charged with murder for fatally stabbing man in parking garage

NEWARK, N.J. (1010 WINS) — A Newark man has been charged with murder for fatally stabbing another man to death, officials said Monday.

Michael Townsend Jr., 31, was arrested on Sunday and charged with murder and weapons offenses after 31-year-old Jabari A. Mason's killing, according to Acting Essex County Prosecutor Theodore N. Stephens and Newark Public Safety Director Fritz Fragé.

Last Friday, police responded around 11:27 a.m. to a report of a victim lying with apparent stab wounds inside the parking garage on the 400 block of Mt. Prospect Avenue in Newark.

He was pronounced dead at the scene at 11:40 a.m., officials said.

The investigation is active and ongoing.
