UNION CITY, N.J. (WCBS 880) -- A man was sentenced to 40 years in a New Jersey prison for kidnapping, tying up, and torturing a man with whom he once had a sexual relationship, officials said Thursday.

According to the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office, on Aug. 15, 2019, 43-year-old James Pilotti broke into the Roseland home of a man he once had a sexual relationship with, then kidnapped him and brutally beat him.
Pilotti then tied up the man with cords and duct tape and spent about six hours beating the victim with his fists, a lamp, and a brick, authorities said.
He also forced the victim to take sleeping pills with alcohol but was able to escape the following morning, and ran to a neighbor’s house for help.
The incident happened four days after Pilotti was released from jail for breaking into the victim’s house the previous year.
In March, a jury found Pilotti guilty of nine counts, including first-degree kidnapping, aggravated assault, three counts of unlawful possession of a weapon, three counts of possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, and aggravated assault by strangulation on a domestic violence victim.
The jury was deadlocked on the charge of attempted murder.
Pilotti has previous convictions for aggravated assault, weapons offenses, terroristic threats, and criminal mischief. He must serve at least 85 percent of his sentence, officials said.
