JACKSON, N.J. (1010 WINS) -- A man accused of attempting to use counterfeit bills at a New Jersey outlet mall was arrested after he tried to destroy and discard the money while being chased by police, authorities said.

According to police, on Nov. 8, an undercover detective was notified of two people using counterfeit money to purchase items at Jackson Premium Outlets in Jackson.

The detective approached and asked to speak with the 26-year-old Fort Lauderdale resident who then tossed his shopping bags and began to run.

The man led the detective on about a quarter-mile a foot pursuit through the outlet's parking lot, police noted.

During the chase, the man ripped up several fake $100 bills and threw them, officials said.

Authorities arrested the man and discovered he still had over $1,000 in fake bills.

The detective determined the bills weren’t legitimate due to their texture and color and because they all contained the same serial number.

The man was charged with five counts of possession of counterfeit bills, destruction of evidence, obstruction and hindering apprehension.

Police said a second man is wanted in connection to this incident.
