HOLMDEL, N.J. (1010 WINS) — A man shot by police is facing multiple charges one day after authorities say he stole and crashed two vehicles, including a commercial delivery vehicle from a New Jersey hospital parking lot.

Justin F. Chacon, 33, is charged with three counts of first-degree carjacking, third-degree resisting arrest and other offenses, the Monmouth County Prosecutor's Office announced Thursday.

Holmdel police officers responded to Bayshore Medical Center just after 5:45 a.m. Wednesday in response to a report that a man, later identified as Chacon, had stolen the commercial delivery vehicle from the hospital's parking lot.

Sources told NBC New York that Chacon, who has addresses in Brooklyn and Old Bridge, had just been discharged from the hospital.

Shortly after, according to prosecutors, police were called to a report of a car accident on Route 35 and Navesink River Road.

When they arrived, they found that Chacon had crashed the stolen vehicle into the highway's center median and then carjacked a SUV from a good Samaritan who had stopped and tried to help him.

Police then responded to a report of a second crash just before 6:15 a.m. on the northbound lanes of Route 35 close to the intersection of Centerville Road.

Investigators said Chacon had collided with a garbage truck, causing the stolen SUV he was driving to leave the roadway, strike a telephone pole and burst into flames.

Chacon allegedly attempted to enter two more vehicles parked on the highway after he fled the SUV while brandishing a pair of wire-cutting pliers, but was rebuffed by each of the drivers.

Prosecutors said he was then seen walking in traffic by police, who ordered him to drop the weapon. He allegedly ignored the order and began advancing in their direction. One of the officers then shot Chacon.

After a "prolonged" struggle, prosecutors said he was arrested and transported to a local hospital, where he remains in stable condition.

The investigation into his alleged actions is ongoing, and anyone with information about them is being asked to contact MCPO Detective Joshua Rios or Detective Ryan Mahony, both reachable at 800-533-7443.

The Monmouth County Prosecutor's Office Professional Responsibility Unit is also investigating the officer-involved shooting.
