YONKERS, N.Y. (WCBS 880) -- Two women were found stabbed to death inside a Yonkers home after police were there to conduct a wellness check, officials announced Tuesday.

It happened at 68 Shipman Ave. where police said the victims were a 70- year-old mother and a 38-year-old daughter.
Yonkers Police Commissioner John Mueller said the situation played out around 4:30 p.m. Monday when cops made a welfare check after a concerned friend hadn’t heard from the daughter since Friday.
When officers responded, there was no answer at the door, but police noticed a broken window at the back of the house, but it’s unclear if that was due to forced entry.
Police forced their way inside, where they found the two female victims with “knife trauma,” one of whom was an employee of Yonkers public schools, Mueller said.
Mueller and Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano tried to quell fears of local residents, insisting that the fatal crime was isolated, and that the perpetrator likely knew the victims. Both town officials called the scene “horrific.”
Police also confirmed that a build up of items on the property could make the investigation particularly difficult. Pictures taken from above the home by ABC7 show bags of trash and debris throughout the home’s yard.
“I don’t know if I would characterize it as hoarding at this point, but I will say there are lots and lots and lots of items and property in and around the house,” said Mueller.
Officials warned that the scene could be taped off for days as the investigation continues.
“At this point we are speaking with a number of people … there are multiple leads we are trying to run down,” said Mueller.
