BLUEBERRIES RECALL: Dole recalls some blueberries over potential parasite contamination

NEW YORK (WCBS 880) — Dole has voluntary recalled some of its fresh blueberries sold in New York over concerns about potential contamination involving an intestinal parasite.

The Food and Drug Administration announced the recall impacts a limited number of cases of the company's fresh blueberries that come in plastic clamshell packages in a variety of sizes.

The product was distributed in New York, Illinois, Maine, Wisconsin and the Canadian provinces of Alberta and British Columbia.

According to a June 25 press release, the recall was prompted due to possible Cyclospora contamination.

The parasite can cause an intestinal infection that could result in severe abdominal pain, diarrhea, nausea and vomiting, body aches and fatigue.

The infection is treated with antibiotics and most people respond quickly to treatment, the FDA said.

No illnesses have been reported.

Only Dole fresh blueberries with the exact UPC and lot code combinations identified below are included in the recall:

Consumers who have the recalled product in their home should discard it immediately. The FDA warns the product should not be consumed.
