PODCAST: The untold history of Black and Asian solidarity

The myth perpetuates a stereotype which mischaracterizes all Asian people as hard working and successful. The myth has often been used as a weapon against the Black community. After years of solidarity, the myth has also driven a wedge between both races.

Negative stereotypes and racism continue to impact the Asian American community today. Even as the pandemic winds down, a new report suggests that 21% of Americans falsely believe that the Asian American community is responsible for the spread of COVID. The report also found that 33% of respondents believe Asian Americans are more loyal to their country of origin.

In honor of Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month, this week’s Beyond Black History Month podcast digs into how this harmful stereotype was used to pit communities of color against each other.
