NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — A Westchester grand jury indicted Robert Durst, 78, Monday for the murder of his first wife Kathie Durst in 1982.
Durst, a New York real estate heir, is facing a second-degree murder charge, District Attorney Mimi Rocah said weeks after a previous complaint was filed on Oct. 19.
Kathie Durst went missing on Jan. 31, 1982, and was legally declared dead in 2017.
“When Kathleen Durst disappeared on January 31, 1982, her family and friends were left with pain, anguish and questions that have contributed to their unfaltering pursuit of justice for the last 39 years," Rocah said. "The District Attorney’s Office reinvigorated its investigation into Robert Durst just 10 months ago when I took Office, launched the Cold Case Bureau, and dedicated the resources and skill that I thought this case deserved."
Durst began a life sentence after a California jury convicted him for the 2000 murder of his best friend Susan Berman.
He tested positive for COVID-19 and was placed on a ventilator days after his conviction. He was transferred to the California Health Care Facility after his hospitalization.
Rocah said a warrant was issued for Durst's arrest.
"For nearly four decades there has been a great deal of speculation about this case, much of it fueled by Robert Durst’s own highly publicized statements," Rocah added. “An indictment is a crucial step in the process of holding wrongdoers accountable for their actions."
