HILLSIDE, N.J. (1010 WINS/WCBS 880) -- A 16-year-old boy accidentally shot and wounded himself as he was fleeing from cops in New Jersey Thursday night, police said.
The Newark teen's gun went off in his waistband as he was running from officers responding to a report of vehicle burglaries in Hillside, the town's police chief, Vince Ricciardi, told NJ.com on Friday.
As officers arrived at Belleview Terrace and Highland Avenue around 11 p.m., the teen and two other people took off, according to police.
During the foot chase, officers came across the teen lying on the ground, saying, "I shot myself."
EMS transported him in stable condition to an area hospital.
He was charged with juvenile delinquency, resisting arrest, eluding, unlawful possession of a weapon and unlawful possession of hollow point bullets, according to the report.
Police allegedly recovered a 9mm handgun in his waistband.
A second 16-year-old was questioned but not immediately charged, while the third person was not located.
