NJ couple, 70 and 71, found dead in house fire died by gunshot in murder-suicide

READINGTON, N.J. (1010 WINS) -- Police now believe a married couple that was found dead in a Readington house fire died by gunshot wound in an apparent murder-suicide.

Kathryn Shern, 70, and her husband Charles Shern, 71, were discovered dead in a burning home in the Whitehouse Station section of Readington around 6 a.m. on July 3.

The Hunterdon County Prosecutor’s Office revised the cause of death in a statement on Friday.

The prosecutor’s office did not say who authorities believe died by murder and who died by suicide.

Police are carrying out an investigation into the deaths.
