ABERDEEN, N.J. (1010 WINS) -- An 88-year-old New Jersey woman reportedly tried to drive across several lanes of traffic on the Garden State Parkway over the weekend before she was struck and killed by an SUV, state police said.

The victim was stopped in a Ford on the right shoulder of the southbound parkway, near milepost 120.5 in Aberdeen, around 10:45 a.m. Saturday when she tried to cross three lanes of traffic and was hit by a Lexus NX SUV.

The Ford driver, Joan Butler, of West Orange, was rushed to Bayshore Medical Center in Holmdel but did not survive, a state police spokesperson told NJ.com.

The driver of the Lexus, a 49-year-old man, suffered minor injuries.

The crash remains under investigation.
