NJ gymnastics coach charged with sex offenses against teen athletes

MANCHESTER, N.J. (1010 WINS) -- A gymnastics coach was charged with sex offenses against athletes he coached when they were teenagers in New Jersey, authorities said on Monday.

Sasha Raught, 55, was charged with first-degree aggravated sexual assault and three counts of second-degree sexual assault, Monmouth County Prosecutor Raymond Santiago said.

For about 30 years, Raught coached youth gymnastics at several locations in Monmouth County, and is charged with sexually assaulting three athletes he trained at two facilities, Santiago said in a statement.

Two of the teens were victimized in the early-to-mid 1990s,when Raught was employed at Shrewsbury Gymnastics in Shrewsbury, and a the third teen was victimized in 2008, when Raught worked for Jonas Gymnastics Academy in Marlboro, officials said.

Raught was arrested at his Manchester home late last month, prosecutors said. He is being held in the Monmouth County jail pending a detention hearing scheduled for Wednesday.

If convicted, Raught faces up to 20 years in state prison.

According to the U.S. Center for Safesport, an organization created to protect young athletes in U.S. Olympic sports, Raught was issued a temporary suspension by USA Gymnastics and given a no-contact directive on Sept. 16, 2020, for alleged misconduct.
