SECAUCUS, N.J. (1010 WINS) — Jeffrey Machno, a 43-year-old librarian, filed a complaint with the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission claiming he was fired because he is gay.
Machno was hired as a part-time library assistant for the Secaucus Public Library in 2020 and quickly became a popular figure in the town hosting remote trivia nights and other activities during the pandemic.
In 2021 he hosted a local talent show — Secaucus Got Talent.
Machno’s supervisor told him his “gay lifestyle” was inappropriate and started excluding him from work events, according to the complaint.
He wasn’t invited back as a host of the 2022 Secaucus Got Talent event.
Machno said he reported his supervisor’s alleged discriminatory behavior to the executive director of the library, who refused to intervene on his behalf.
He sent an email to the vice president of the board of trustees complaining about the treatment on Oct. 28. Just three days later, he was fired.
Machno has since found another part-time job at a different library, but he hopes the EEOC complaint will put an end to the alleged toxic work environment at the SPL.
The complaint alleges harassment, discrimination and retaliation for his sexual orientation.
