WESTWOOD, N.J. (1010 WINS) — A 76-year-old New Jersey man was arrested this week after prosecutors say he hid his sister's remains in his home.
Mark Winters is facing charges of second-degree desecrating human remains and two counts of fourth-degree aggravated assault on law enforcement officers after the discovery, Bergen County Prosecutor Mark Musella said.
Westwood police responded to Winters' Westwood home to conduct a welfare check on Monday around 1 p.m. Musella said officers met Winters at the front foor and allowed them to enter inside.
Once inside, officers found the deceased remains of Joan Winters, 70, who lived there with her brother.
After the finding, Winters allegedly became confrontational with officers and assaulted them. An investigation revealed that Winters concealed his sister's remains for a prolonged period of time in the home.
An autopsy conducted on Tuesday indicates that the death was not suspicious, Musella said.
Winters is being held at the Bergen County Jail pending his court appearance.
