PATERSON, N.J. (1010 WINS/WCBS 880) -- Officials have one person in custody after a New Jersey state trooper was shot overnight in Paterson, authorities said.

According to police, the trooper was shot in the lower leg at approximately 12:50 a.m., while on patrol in the area of 30th Street.

The trooper sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to an area hospital where he will undergo surgery, Paterson Mayor Andre Sayegh said.

He is listed in stable condition.

Two other suspects remain at large, officials said.

"We're still gathering a lot of the details," Sayegh said. "All we know is that we have someone in custody and there are other individuals that we will apprehend."

Sayegh lives just a few blocks away from the shooting scene. “This is unfortunately the warped world we live in, where people are shooting at cops,” he said.

Officials have not disclosed any additional details about the shooting or identified the suspect in custody as the investigation continues.

“We will ensure that all those responsible for this violent and heinous act are caught and brought to justice,” Gov. Phil Murphy said in a statement.
