The Orange, N.J. woman was going through the checkpoint on Saturday when an officer saw a weapon in her bag as it passed through the X-Ray monitor, according to the TSA.

While searching her bag, officers found a .38 caliber revolver loaded with five bullets tucked into the lining of her bag. The gun was confiscated by Port Authority Police and the woman was arrested on weapons charges.

The woman allegedly did not know the gun was in her bag, TSA said.

"Travelers should not attempt to conceal weapons among their carry-on items when entering a TSA security checkpoint," Thomas Carter, TSA's federal security director for New Jersey said in a statement. "This is a fine example of how we use the technology available to us to help ensure that guns are stopped before someone tries to carry one onto their flight. In addition to her arrest, this woman also faces a stiff federal financial civil penalty."

The incident marked the 11th gun confiscated at Newark Liberty International Airport checkpoints this year. In 2021, TSA officers detected 5,972 guns at security checkpoints around the county and 86 percent of them were loaded.
