TOMS RIVER, N.J. (1010 WINS) — A New Jersey woman woke up this week to find a masked intruder standing over her bed in one of two incidents where burglars targeted homes within an hour, police said.
Just before 6 a.m. Tuesday, three masked men entered a Toms River home on Hickory Street through an unlocked bathroom window, police said.
The group rummaged through several kitchen drawers and removed four sets of keys, exited through the home's back door and fled with the homeowner’s 2022 BMW M8.
Although the homeowners weren't at home when the burglary occurred, they were notified via home surveillance.
Police said officers headed to a burglary in progress less than an hour later at a home on Tall Ship Court. Responding officers were told that the masked bandits entered through an unlocked first floor window and ransacked the first floor while the homeowners were sleeping upstairs.
However, police said the woman awoke to someone in dark clothing, wearing a mask, standing over the bed. She apparently startled the suspects, who then fled the home. The homeowners were not injured.
Investigators said in each incident, the suspect entered the home through an unlocked first-floor window.
While an investigation remains ongoing, the Toms River Police Department said it is reminding the public to lock their doors and windows and never leave their key FOB's in their vehicles.
Anyone with information on the crimes was asked to email Toms River police Detective Joseph Mastronardy at jmastronardy@trpolice.org.
