NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — A 19-year-old NYU college student was in critical condition Saturday after diving into shallow water in New Jersey, police said.

The Seattle man dove off a dock into Greenwood Lake, near Lake Park Terrace, around 12 p.m. in West Milford while visiting friends, police spokesperson Lt. Eric Darnsteadt told NJ.com.

"He dove off the dock, into what probably is shallow water, striking his head and [causing a] potential cervical neck injury," Darnsteadt said.

Once police arrived, they saw that the man had been pulled from the water and brought to the shoreline by friends, the spokesperson added.

Responding paramedics began life-saving efforts before transporting the man several houses away on the beach for easier access to medical care.

The man was taken to Greenwood Lake Airport for a medical evacuation, Darnsteadt said. He was then flown to St. Joseph's University Medical Center in Paterson.

The full extent of the man's injuries remains unclear.
