FAIRFIELD, N.J. (1010 WINS) — Three men aboard a small private plane were uninjured when it ran off a runway at Essex County Airport on Sunday afternoon, Fairfield Police said.
Authorities said the 2020 Citation CJ3 Plus jet was descending to land on one of the airport's runways when strong crosswinds prevented the plane from touching down, traveling "briefly on the runway, then onto a grassy area and finally [ending] up in the drainage brook."
The pilot, a second in command, and the plane's owner were attempting to flee as first responders arrived on the scene.
"We are very relieved that no one was injured as a result of this incident," said Fairfield Police Chief Anthony G. Manna.
As of Sunday evening, the plane was leaking jet fuel into the brook, police said. The Nutley Fire Department’s Hazardous Materials Unit was called in to assist the Fairfield Fire Department in helping to contain the spill.
The Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Bureau were both notified of the incident, officials said.
