AMITYVILLE, N.Y. (1010 WINS) — Suffolk County Police said Wednesday that they intercepted thousands of dollars from an elderly Montana man who was scammed into sending money needed for his son's bail on Long Island.

Authorities said the 71-year-old victim was contacted by a man claiming to be his son who said he had been arrested for DWI following a motor vehicle crash and that a pregnant woman was critically injured.
The Montana man then received another call from a man claiming to be his son’s lawyer, who directed the victim to ship $17,000 in cash to cover bail expenses to a location in Amityville.

Financial Crimes Unit detectives were notified of the scam and the money was intercepted before it was delivered to the intended destination, officials said.
Anyone who believes they may be a victim of a scam or anyone who has information about a scam is asked to call the Financial Crimes Unit at 631-852-6821.
