Around 3:30 p.m., a call came in to police with a report of at least two people trying to get into a garage in the Middletown neighborhood where a Range Rover was parked inside, according to police.
The would-be thieves fled the scene in a white BMW SUV after a neighbor intervened, officials said.
“In response to these types of incidents, Middletown Police Department has taken very proactive measures to increase our presence in these areas,” Deputy Chief Paul Bailey told NJ Advance Tuesday. “We urge the public to ensure their vehicles are locked. Remove their key fobs and bring them into an area of a house where the vehicles no longer sense those key fobs.”
No additional details about the exact location of the home were released by police.
The incident comes after the state saw a stark increase in stolen cars compared to 2020, according to the Office of the Attorney General.
Murphy appeared on News 12 New Jersey’s “Ask the Governor” and called the situation “serious stuff.”
“Sadly, this is all over America right now. Certainly, it’s all over New Jersey,” Murphy said. “I can’t believe these guys were stupid enough to come close … given the security on our street.”
